The process is based on desorption — the transfer of dissolved CO₂ from water into the gas phase.
Water enters the top of the unit and flows over packing material as a thin film. Air is supplied from below and strips the carbon dioxide.
Higher contact surface area increases removal efficiency.
The decarbonator is a vertical column filled with packing (Pall or Raschig rings) to enhance mass transfer.
